they’ve been having this argument since the first practice.
i sit behind a kit. i don’t have a tube. i don’t have a humbucker. i have a kick drum, a snare, four cymbals, and an opinion that nobody asks for. the kick kicks. the snare cracks. the cymbals cymbal. the show happens.
what i’ve learned, watching this play out for ten years now: it doesn’t matter. rich plugs in, sounds like rich. vicki plugs in, sounds like vicki. they could swap rigs and still sound exactly like themselves, because tone is in the hands, the timing, the intent. everything else is a hat.
every practice the same. somebody plugs in, the other one comments, and we lose ten minutes. then i count off and we play, and it sounds like the band, because we’re the band. it’s not the gibson. it’s not the strat. it’s certainly not the amp.
nobody asks the drummer. as it should be.
